P&G and partners, including PSI (Population Services International), Save the Children, CARE, AmeriCares, Action Against Hunger, GlobalMedic and others, will provide more than 300 million liters of clean drinking water by providing 31 million water purification packets made by P&G. This commitment is estimated to prevent more than 10 million days of illness in the region and represents a total investment of more than $3 million.

"As P&G invests in a growing and vibrant business in sub-Saharan Africa, we have a responsibility to help improve the quality of life where we can," said Procter and Gamble's Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, Bob McDonald. "There is great need right now in the Horn of Africa, and we are here at CGI (News - Alert) to commit to provide clean drinking water to 2 million people impacted by the famine."

President Clinton joined P&G at an event to announce the commitment. He has said Procter & Gamble's effort to improve lives with the P&G Children's Safe Drinking Water Program is making a powerful global impact. "At the Clinton Global Initiative, we have a wide variety of members from business, government, and te nonprofit world who are working together to address this critical issue." President Clinton said. "P&G is doing more than almost any other corporation to save kids' lives by providing clean drinking water."

Joining President Clinton and Procter & Gamble was actress, singer/songwriter and PSI Ambassador Mandy Moore. She spoke to those gathered about her work distributing P&G's water purification packets in Africa and her belief in the significance of this commitment.

"As an ambassador for PSI, I've seen first-hand the power of the P&G and PSI partnership to provide clean drinking water where it's needed most and truly save lives. The commitment P&G is making tonight is incredibly important. I'm proud to be a part of this work."

This is the sixth consecutive year the P&G Children's Safe Drinking Water Program has made commitments to touch and improve lives at CGI.

About the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI)

Established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) convenes global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges. Since 2005, CGI Annual Meetings have brought together nearly 150 current and former heads of state, 18 Nobel (News - Alert) Prize laureates, hundreds of leading CEOs, heads of foundations, major philanthropists, directors of the most effective nongovernmental organizations, and prominent members of the media. These CGI members have made nearly 2,000 commitments, which have already improved the lives of 300 million people in more than 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued in excess of $63 billion. The 2011 Annual Meeting will take place Sept. 20-22 in New York City.

This year, CGI also convened CGI America, a meeting focused on developing ideas for driving economic growth in the United States. The CGI community also includes CGI U, which hosts an annual meeting for undergraduate and graduate students, and CGI Lead, which engages a select group of young CGI members for leadership development and collective commitment-making.
