Infonetics: Over 3/4 of N. American businesses surveyed plan to use SIP trunking by 2016

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CAMPBELL, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/30/14 -- Technology market research firm Infonetics Research released excerpts from its 2014 SIP Trunking and eSBC Strategies: North American Enterprise Survey, which details enterprises' plans for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking and enterprise session border controllers (eSBCs), including expenditures, trunking providers, and deployment models.

ANALYST NOTE"Businesses continue to migrate to VoIP and unified communications on their premises, but when it comes to connecting to the PSTN, legacy technologies have not disappeared. T1 lines are still the most commonly-used trunking service today, though they will come down by 2016 as the use of SIP trunking grows," notes Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC, and IMS at Infonetics Research.

"SIP trunking is becoming more mainstream with North American businesses, but it's important to remember that few companies have done a 100% cutover," Myers continues. "This represents a significant opportunity long term for SIP trunking." SIP TRUNKING AND ENTERPRISE SBC SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS Half of respondent companies use SIP trunking today, increasing to 78% by 2016 as T1 use decreases but doesn't go awayTopping the list of reasons survey respondents are deploying SIP trunking are centralized trunking, improved reliability, and speed of deployment/service changesThe main barriers to deploying SIP trunking are not directly related to the service itself, but more about respondents' existing situations: many are satisfied with their existing voice services, their service contracts aren't up for renewal, or SIP trunks aren't offered at the desired locationCisco leads the list of installed PBX and UC manufacturers at respondent organizations, followed by, in alphabetical order, AT&T, Avaya, IBM, and MicrosoftSIP STUDY SYNOPSISFor its 21-page SIP trunking and enterprise SBC strategies survey, Infonetics interviewed purchase-decision makers with detailed knowledge of trunking services at 184 North American organizations with at least 101 employees. Respondents were asked about SIP trunking deployment models, drivers and barriers, capacity, interconnections, extensions, spending plans, and service providers.
