Twitter Out A CTO

By

It was but a rumor first heard via TechCrunch that Twitter’s chief technology officer, Greg Pass, was leaving the company.

A tweet by co-founder Biz Stone confirmed that, “Indeed, Greg was moving on. He joined Twitter as a vice president of engineering after Twitter bought a company he co-founded called Summize and used it to build Twitter's search function. He was an integral person in helping the company grow its infrastructure to handle its growth.”

Pass was Twitter’s first CTO and was actually Twitter’s old vice president of engineering. He held that role for about two years. Before that, he served at Summize, AOL and ToFish.

A PR representative from Twitter says that the company is not looking for a replacement for Pass, and that it is not clear what Pass plans to do next.

Perhaps this news will overshadow all the hubbub regarding Twitter and Britain’s privacy rules.

Privacy rulings that prevent newspapers printing stories already in the public domain due to Twitter and other social networks are “unsustainable” and “unfair,” at least that is what the Prime Minister David Cameron is saying.

This all spiraled downhill after the identity of a celebrity was widely shared on Twitter despite being protected by a court injunction.

It is unfair and “rather unsustainable” that newspapers cannot print information that is commonly known online, Cameron said in an interview on ITV1's Daybreak program. However, he noted that “the law is the law” and judges are being called upon to interpret existing legislation.

“What I've said in the past is the danger is that judgments are effectively writing a new law, which is what parliament is meant to do,” Cameron said. “So I think the government — parliament — has got to take some time out, have a proper look at this, have a think about what we can do. But I'm not sure there is going to be a simple answer.”
