Today, Octasic (News - Alert) Inc. announced that Digium has selected Octasic's Vocallo MGW for use in Digium's upcoming G100 and G200 product lines. The G100 and G200 represent two of Digium's (News - Alert) IP media gateways, and the deal gives Octasic better presence in the market, and gives Digium's media gateways some extra punch.
Digium's media gateways are devices geared toward establishing an intermediary connection between TDM lines and IP networks. A combination of Asterisk (News - Alert) open source communications systems and an embedded platform, those users looking for Asterisk connectivity don’t need to look any further. The Vocallo MGW, meanwhile, offers scalability and versatility in one centralized package. It offers voice processing, packet-based wideband audio, and video processing, making it a natural choice for telepresence systems and video conferencing as well.
Digium, through its VP of engineering, David Deaton, welcomed Octasic to the fold by saying that, "Octasic's devices have become the de facto standard in the Asterisk community for voice compression and Voice Quality Enhancement." Meanwhile, Octasic's VP of sales and business development, Fabio Gambacorta (News - Alert), made it clear why Octasic and Digium were together on this front, saying, "These industrial grade appliances leverage our field-hardened VoIP solutions to simplify SIP gateway deployments."
Improving offerings in the VoIP and SIP sector is generally a smart idea, especially given the growing use of telepresence systems in the telecommuting concept as well as a substitute for business travel. Correct use of communications tools in this fashion can represent significant savings to the bottom line, and as the technology improves, the difference between having an employee in the office and an employee operating out of a home office will become less and less noticeable with each new version.
