Sometimes it’s easy to tell which of your Facebook (News - Alert) friends are affected by a severe storm simply by scrolling through your newsfeed. Sometimes you may not have even known there was severe weather until you look at your newsfeed. Facebook and The Weather Channel have paired up to deliver My Friends’ Weather, a service that connects the weather to the people in your life.
With the service, users can see friends and family who may be affected by “Breaking Now” weather news, so you can be first to warn them and stay in touch. Once you have signed up with your Facebook account, Breaking Now weather alerts will include your friends and family who live in the affected area. These people will only show for you and only when you are logged into Facebook.
My Friends’ Weather allows you to share Breaking Now news with friends, click on a friend in the red bar, or click to see more friends.
Users can add comments on a friend’s weather or notify a friend about a Breaking Now alert. The service allows you to prioritize people you have listed on Facebook as family or close friends. The service alerts users based on the location listed as their current city on their Facebook profile.
This isn’t the first time The Weather Channel has gone social. It has integrated Twitter (News - Alert) on its website and allows users to search for weather tweets in any town of choice, as well as search the most tweets in the last hour to see the top five cities being tweeted about.
The Weather Channel also hosts an iWitness Weather page, where users can share photos and video for a chance to be seen on The Weather Channel. On the page, you can search featured photos and videos, highest rated and view through different categories, including seen on The Weather Channel, lightning, clouds, sunset, home and garden, outdoors and wildlife and travel.
