Real 2013 Mobile Resolutions/Predictions from a Mobile Fanatic

Have you ever wondered why a New Year's resolution needs to be something that strikes us as the "right thing" to do? It's always about eating right and losing those extra pounds. It's never about "Well, I'm going to enjoy a much higher percentage of gourmet dinners this year," or "I'm going to ensure that I drink many more vintage wines this year." Well, those last two are just a few of our own 2013 New Year's resolutions. If you think about it, they are also predictions for 2013. They come with a high degree of confidence on our part that we'll get them right and that we'll keep them as well.

But we have a few more resolutions/predictions that are specifically related to mobile. And no, we're not going to have one that says we are finally going to make sure we have all of our mobile passwords properly enabled.

So then…for 2013 we have resolved and we predict that we will:

• Own more mobile devices than ever before. At a minimum, we expect we'll be sporting: the iPhone (News - Alert) 6 in several colors that are not black or white, 5th and 6th gen iPads, at least one but more likely two iPad minis with retina display, and a few iPhone 5s to pass around to younger family members.
• Get an aluminum body next generation Lumia 920 (or 940 or whatever Nokia calls it) that will be far lighter than today's Lumia 920, and at least one Nokia-designed and built tablet.
• Acquire a maxed out Microsoft Surface Pro and a next generation Surface RT.
• Track down a Samsung (News - Alert) Galaxy camera to go with our current 41 MP Nokia PureView 808 (which has never been used as a phone and never will be), along with a "next, next" generation Galaxy S V with a slightly bendable display to control the camera remotely (though even the Galaxy S V will continue to lack any of the iPhone 6's high end tactile and rich look and feel elements, and will continue to feel cheaply manufactured due to its high plastic content).
• Purchase a Pebble Watch, but at only $150 we may get a few more.
• Receive as a gift (possibly from ourselves) a much more expensive Apple iWatch - because the Pebble is cool and will wear well while playing some tennis, but the iWatch will have the cachet needed for the yacht club - it should show just in time for Christmas 2013.
• Keep on hand at least one super thin HTC (News - Alert) next generation DNA smartphone when it shows up in July, because that huge HD screen will often come in handy, especially for watching endless pro and college football highlights the second half of the year. Beyond this we will not buy into anything else that claims to be called a smartphone and sporting a five inch screen. Huge smartphones are being predicted as "the trend" for 2013 - we surely hope not!
• Not give up our 25 inch HD monitor or our 24 GB, 6 core desktop PC that it connects to.
• Not purchase the Apple 3D 42 inch TV with massively integrated iOS capabilities, because we'll have decided to go with Samsung's latest 85 inch, 3/8 inch thick, flex screen 3D UltraHD TV instead. In truth, we are absolutely certain and know, even today, that we won't miss the massively integrated iOS capabilities one bit. We expect the Samsung TV to be fully integrated with our Galaxy S V of course.
• Continue to use Waze for all of our travel and mapping needs, whether Apple acquires the company or not.
• No longer need to write about Research in Motion (News - Alert), though once Samsung acquires it next year we'll need to evolve our thinking on Samsung's chances for success in the North American enterprise market - which will improve substantially.
• Continue to suggest that HP should acquire Nokia and get HP-branded smartphones and tablets out the door before the summer is out.
• Continue to use subsidized smartphone plans from AT&T and won't go the T-Mobile unsubsidized mobile device route or the possible Sprint (News - Alert) "no contract, pay as you go (also with unsubsidized devices) plan" route that may soon become real.
• Remain wary of the mobile patent wars, which now truly bore us to tears and which will see no end this year.
• Launch a high tech wearables conference because in fact that is where mobile will begin to find its next reality in 2013.

There is so much more of course to resolve to do. We're targeting a 90 percent success rate on the above for 2013. Only 90 percent? We have to admit that our confidence level is very low on the Samsung 85 inch TV and perhaps the patent wars will end.
