On January 17, 2013, Amazon.com (News - Alert) unveiled it opened the doors to its MP3 store, which will be accessible through the Safari browser on the iPhone (News - Alert) and iPod touch. When users purchase from the store, their music will be saved to Amazon's Cloud Player. This will allow for the content to be an accessed from practically any Internet-connected device.
Prior to this, it was not possible for iPhone and iPod touch users to buy music from Amazon, as there was no way to make in app purchases from the Cloud Player app. “For the first time ever, iOS users have a way [to] do that – now they can access Amazon's huge catalog of music, features like personalized recommendations, deals like albums for $5, songs for $0.69, and they can buy their music once and use it everywhere,” said Steve Boom (News - Alert), vice president of Amazon Music.
The Amazon MP3 store is HTML5-based and is available at www.amazon.com/mp3. This includes a full catalog of 22 million songs and more than two million albums. Purchases will be made available immediately and work great in the Cloud Player app, which comes with free storage for everything bought from the MP3 store.
Amazon Cloud Player offers a free service with storage space for 250 songs. The service is also available in a Premium tier, which costs $24.99 annually, and provides space for 250,000 songs. In addition, Amazon MP3s are DRM-free, which means that they can be played on any essentially device that can play MP3s, or access Cloud Player.
Amazon.com is based in Seattle, and has been open for service since 1995 and currently offer “Earth’s Biggest Selection.” Amazon attempts to make everything its customers want available at the lowest prices in a quest to become “Earth's most customer-centric company.”
