Apple's (News - Alert) new iPad Mini with Retina has just hit the marketplace, conveniently timed in the build-up to holiday shopping extravaganzas. The latest and greatest version of the iPad mini, which retails for $299, is quite similar to its preceding model. Except, you know it's better. The new version is a tad thicker (and weightier) than its predecessor, but users who are upgrading should be happy to hear that it's within reason to use covers sized for previous models for the new one.

But don't get too excited, or rather, if you are excited, seize that energy now and get your credit card out. The Retina iPad Mini could fly off the shelves, and if you're eyeing it as a prospective gift for the upcoming holidays, you'll have to get in line...pronto.

According to 9to5Mac, anyone planning on buying the Retina iPad Mini needs to act fast. Analysts say that two-million products are to be issued, which is a considerably small number once you tally in in the demand and the relatively reasonable price (hey, it's not cheap, but it's getting good reviews and is bound to be a hit for the nephew who has it all).

Both KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo and IHS (News - Alert) iSuppli’s Rhoda Alexander have stated that supply is expected to be pretty tight. Part of the reason for the shortage of products could be owed to the super high-res screen. Production is expected to double to around 4.5 million in the first quarter of next year. So if you're patient, this could very well make a superb Valentine's Day or St, Patrick's Day gift.

If it so happens that you miss out on the iPad Retina in time for the holidays, you can probably get your hands on the iPad Air, which touts production of more that 10 million units this quarter.
