Verizon has selected Amplidata (News - Alert) Himalaya storage architecture on which to deploy their entire cloud infrastructure.
“We’re pleased to have a Fortune 50 enterprise service provider adopting our technology and rolling it out on petabyte scale,” Mark Ward, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Amplidata, told TMC’s Erik Linask (News - Alert) at Cloud Expo 2014. “We’re really proud to be part of this Verizon announcement.”

Verizon (News - Alert) Cloud Storage is designed for enterprise cloud workloads that can quickly and securely store and retrieve large data sets, according to a company statement. Verizon Cloud Storage was initially announced in October 2013 and is now in beta version.
Ward points out that Verizon’s number one competitor in cloud storage is Amazon. “By leveraging the Amplidata software, they have been able to reach a new economy of scale on cost, to be able to actually compete effectively and efficiently for that Amazon cloud business,” Ward said.
In addition, John Considine, chief technology officer for Verizon Terremark, said that Amplidata’s storage technology “was built with enterprise clients in mind – providing the speed, security and scalability large organizations need. This is why we chose Himalaya as the core for our object store.”
Using Himalaya, customers can store and manage zettabytes of data and trillions of stored objects, the company explained. Amplidata provides technology for “object-based software defined storage” used by enterprises, original equipment manufacturers and service providers.
Amplidata saw a recent funding round of $11 million. Overall, Amplidata is funded by Intel Capital, Quantum (News - Alert), Swisscom Ventures, Endeavour Vision and Hummingbird Ventures.
The Verizon announcement is a key example of how the Amplidata technology can be put to use. “Verizon understands the needs of its diverse enterprise customers, and laid out the demands for a storage architecture that supports its vision of a complete enterprise-level cloud offering,” Mike Wall, CEO of Amplidata, said in the statement. “Himalaya is the architecture that brings that vision to life and helps Verizon renew its leadership as the cloud provider for enterprises large and small.”
