Evernote Acquires Skitch, More Purchases Possible

By

Evernote has acquired Skitch, and more acquisitions are possible, according to media reports. Evernote lets users store notes, photos and PDFs in online notebooks, which are accessible via an Internet connection.

Skitch is a sketching and photo-annotation application. Evernote made the purchase after using Skitch internally. Details on the deal were not released.

“This is probably the start of a buying spree, as Evernote recently raised $50 million for acquisitions …,” according to The BusinessInsider.

In July, TechZone360 reported that Evernote raised $50 million from investors in a funding round led by Sequoia Capital. Also taking part in the round was Morgenthaler Ventures.

It appears that Evernote want to keep Skitch independent and grow the company to the size of Evernote, The BusinessInsider added.

The BusinessInsider also commented the Skitch purchase fits with Evernote because it provides character recognition in images.

“You can snap a picture of a business card, and then search for the name in that business card and get the photo and the information in it,” The BusinessInsider said. Many users have images on Evernote and want to add things to them.

“Our goal is to be the ubiquitous productivity platform,” Evernote CEO Phil Libin said at a recent developer conference, reported The San Francisco Chronicle. “Whatever your life's work is, we want you to feel like whenever you use Evernote you've advanced it.”

Libin added that Evernote also wants to turn the company into “the definitive platform for getting work done,” The Chronicle reports.

Skitch was founded in 2010 by four partners in Australia and Norway, according to the company website.

In other company news, Skitch has been developed for Android OS phones and tablets. The new version marks the first mobile version of Skitch. It was available previously for Mac devices.

The company is now working on developing for devices for the iPhone and iPad, according to an Evernote blog post. The new versions will be available for purchase soon.

The Chronicle reported that Evernote has over 12.5 million users, up from 3.9 million during 2010. It adds 42,000 users a day. About 568,000 users pay for the service. Most users use the service for free.
