AT&T Announces Five New Android Phones

By

While Samsung and Google might be holding off on their big announcement as an homage to Steve Jobs, AT&T is going ahead with an announcement of their own this week. Earlier in the year the company had announced that they were going to be rolling out as many as a dozen new Android smartphones this year.

It appears they are working hard to stick to their words as five new models were just unveiled. The Motorola Atrix 2, Samsung Captivate Glide, Samsung Double Time, Pantech Pocket and AT&T Avail were all announced Tuesday afternoon. The new phones bring AT&T’s total Android smartphone line to 19 different models.

It should be noted that the two new smartphones produced by Samsung do not count as the “big” announcement, meaning the company didn’t go back on its word. (For those keeping track.) The phones released today run the gamut when it comes to features and appearance. The Atrix 2 has a 4.3 inch HD screen and an 8-megapixel camera capable of HD video recording. The Captivate Glide has a slide out Qwerty keyboard and a 4 inch AMOLED screen. The phone also sports an 8-megapixel camera on its back and a 1.3-megapixel camera up front.

The Pantech Pocket is considered a candy bar phone thanks to its odd configuration. Still the phone has a 4-inch screen, a 5-megapixel camera. The Double Time isn’t all that flashy, with one 4-inch screen, but the candy bar phone unfolds to reveal another 3.2-inch screen. The double screens are the best features of that phone.

The AT&T Avail brings the total number of pre-paid phones carried to two, with the other being the LG Thrive. Not surprisingly, the phone doesn’t pack a whole lot of power, but it does have Android 2.3, a 3.5-inch screen and 512 MB of RAM. The Avail also comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera.

While the phones have just been recently announced, pricing and when we can get them has not, however, all five phones are expected to hit the market during the holiday season.
