Apple to Launch Updated Self-Checkout App

By

So you're cruising around through the Apple store with your purchase, and the line is long for checking out. What do you do? Soon, you'll be able to check yourself out via an App on your iPhone.

Apple is reportedly getting ready to introduce an update to its retail store iOS app that will allow customers to self-checkout when buying accessories (or other shelf-stocked items...you probably won't be able to self check-out a new iPad 2 for yourself, or any other item that is being kept in back rooms and stock rooms) at Apple retail stores.

Macrumors is reporting that with the updated app, purchases will be charged via the Apple Store app to your iTunes Store account. The new platform is expected to be ready by November 3.

Here's what you do: you choose your merchandise, and initiate the payment through the app. Once you've completed your self-checkout, you show an Apple store worker manning the door your receipt, which will have been emailed to you, as a way of confirming your purchase. In case anyone is tempted to walk out with merchandise but “accidentally” forgot to process it through the app, Apple says store employees will be on alert to make sure anyone leaving the store has proof that their purchase was paid for.

Macrumors is also reporting that Apple will continue to expand its program that allows customers to have their orders from the online Apple store shipped to their local Apple retail stores for pickup.
