Top Five Antivirus Vendors Control Worldwide Market Share

By

Development tools and data services provider OPSWAT has generated market reports on several sectors of security software. The idea is to educate users about software trends in the security business, as well as identify major suppliers to this space.

According to OPSWAT, the report shows usage data for security applications on Windows systems. The data was collected using OPSWAT’s AppRemover tool, which utilizes the detection capabilities of the Framework to collect information regarding the applications installed on endpoint computers.

However, OPSWAT acknowledges that not every security application is included in this report. The company said that antivirus, backup and other security application vendors who are interested in participating in these reports and the OESIS Framework, they should contact the company at [email protected].

According to OPSWAT’s latest market report, AVAST Software had a strong lead in the worldwide antivirus market for the past two years, with 16.69 percent in 2010 and 15.92 percent in 2011. Likewise, Avira, AVG and ESET follow in this year’s rankings, each with over 10 percent of the market share. The report places Symantec in the fifth position with 9.71 percent of the worldwide market.

Although, there are some minor changes in last one year, the top 10 vendors remain the same, with the exception of Trend Micro, who took the 10th position from PC Tools. The worldwide market share held by the top 10 vendors was 87.12 percent, up from last year’s 86.77 percent.

In North America, Symantec was the leader in the antivirus market in 2011 with 15.92 percent share, a slight decrease from 16.63 percent in 2010. Likewise, AVG took the second highest share with an increase to 13.93 percent in 2011, and Microsoft rose to the third position in 2011 with 13.61 percent of the North American market. In the fourth place was AVAST with 12.14 percent share.

While the top four vendors in this report control 55.60 percent of the market, the top ten individual antivirus products together control 59.25 percent of the North American

market. Worldwide, the top ten products hold 62.06 percent of the North American market.
