Instagram is Coming to the Android

By

Instagram, is an application on the iPhone, while allows users to apply various special effects to photos and share them with friends and family. The Polaroid cameras that would print out the picture seconds after the flash went off inspired Instagram.

Since launching, one year ago, more than 50 million users have downloaded the application. When the company was first launched back in Nov. 2010, the company only had six employees. Now, they are currently hiring to help with the large demand of their application.

The popular app is expanding to finally become available on all Android smartphones. Instagram’s CEO, Kevin Systrom spoke about the Android at the LeWeb in Paris. “We have two people working on the Android now,” said Systrom.

Systrom did not provide details on the launch date. PC Mag said the application was originally designed for the iPhone because the Instagram’s founders used it. “The screen and the camera on the iPhone 4 was a turning point. It was really disruptive. Somebody had to come along and take advantage of that disruption,” said Systrom.

Systrom said with some advertising, he is excited to see the number of users increase. “I think the advertising experience is going to be extremely engaging. It’s much harder with text,” said Systrom.

In part to make it more appealing to advertisers, the company is concentrating on increasing its users. “We are only at the tip of where we want to be,” he continued, “Talk to me again when we have 100 million users…and even then I’m not sure if we will have made it. When you think about Facebook and their 800 million active users, there are huge opportunities in the world to do something big. We want to do that,” Systrom told The Global and Mail.

Although, getting advertisers hasn’t seemed to be a problem for the company. Major brand names such as Kate Spade, Burberry, and Audi have joined Instagram. “They’re sharing pictures of products and the message of their brands. That shows we’re at the beginning of what will come with brands,” said Systrom.
