Webtrends plans move to 'Big Pink' in downtown Portland [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore.]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 22--Portland Internet company Webtrends said this morning that it plans to move its headquarters to another building downtown next year, consolidating operations onto a single floor of the U.S. Bancorp Tower.

Webtrends, which employs about 225 on four floors of its current offices in the Pacific First Center on Southwest 6th Ave., will move into one floor of its new home in February.

"The single footprint, all on the same floor, is a really big issue for us. We're pretty fragmented where we are now," said Webtrends chief executive Alex Yoder.

Webtrends will occupy 65,000 square feet, with offices on the third floor of the U.S. Bancorp Tower and the company's data center elsewhere in the building.

That's about the same square footage as Webtrends occupies now, but Yoder said the new layout is more efficient and gives the company some space to grow.

The U.S. Bancorp Tower, known colloquially as "Big Pink," has traditionally housed banking offices, legal firms and other professional services. Recently, though, it's added tech companies to the mix -- notably New Relic, a well-funded San Francisco startup that has more than 70 employees at its Portland office.

"They want to attract technology companies," Yoder said. "They see that as something important and vital to their future." Webtrends provides tools to help businesses track activity on their websites and evaluate the success of social media initiatives. The privately held company has revenues of around $100 million.

Earlier this month, Portland-based telecom company Integra announced plans to move its headquarters from the Lloyd District to east Vancouver. Integra, whose work force was scattered across multiple floors in two buildings, said it needed to consolidate its work force in a less scattered environment.

Webtrends also looked outside downtown, according to Yoder. He said his company considered Hillsboro and heard from business recruiters in Washington, Illinois and Utah.

But Yoder said the pull was strong to keep the company in the Portland area, where it started nearly 20 years ago. He said Webtrends surveyed employees and found 80 percent of them live within a four-mile radius of downtown.

"We want to encourage everyone to be able to use mass transit or bike to work if possible," he said.

U.S. Bancorp Tower is owned by a partnership of Unico Properties and LaSalle Investment Management. Joe Vaughan of Jones Lang LaSalle represented Unico in the deal. Craig Reinhart, Chris Elsenbach, and Matt Newstrom of Cresa Portland represented Webtrends.

Note: This article has been updated with comment and detail from Webtrends CEO Alex Yoder. It was updated again to correct the ownership of U.S. Bancorp Tower.
