Broadband in America: Connectivity and Innovation for All

Throughout the last century, a cornerstone of American innovation has been the country’s telecommunication networks. With countless advancements in broadband and methods of connectivity, businesses have propelled themselves forward with unimaginable speed – and now enjoy unprecedented opportunities for economic growth.

Because broadband is so critical for economic growth and preserving America’s global competitiveness, it is the belief of legislators, regulators and Neustar that all Americans deserve access. As government officials once again seek to enable families, innovators and commercial enterprises across the nation to join forces, Neustar is also continuing in its mission to enable operators to provide ubiquitous connections that encourage broadband adoption and stimulate innovation.

“Over the last 15 years, Neustar has been proud to play a role in helping spur economic growth,” said Chris Drake, vice president of Carrier Services Product Management at Neustar. “Our position as a trusted, neutral third party enables operators across the United States to connect their customers with any network and on any device. Because today’s economic climate makes it even more challenging for operators to offer all of their customers affordable broadband services, the government’s broadband goal is an admirable one: making high-speed connectivity a reality for the millions of Americans who do not currently have access to this essential technology. Neustar understands the need for everyone to be able to leverage the broadband network for innovative new services; we also understand the economic challenges for operators delivering on this mission. Our solutions are designed to enable these services to connect in a profitable, secure and reliable manner – and, of course, with a Neustar architecture designed for continual innovation.”

While America is not the only nation currently launching plans to support growth in advanced broadband technology, the challenges for North American operators differ greatly from many others around the globe. Given the expansive geographic distances and population distribution, operators offering broadband technologies across the United States are making a significant investment and have a greater impetus to deliver as many services as possible across their newly deployed high-speed networks.

“The challenges that face operators in the United States differ significantly from those in other geographic regions,” noted Mike Kane, senior director of Strategic Solutions, Carrier Services at Neustar. “We understand the challenges in migrating to an ‘all-IP’ architecture, especially for rural operators and operators with network islands separated by hundreds, if not thousands, of miles.”

Several of Neustar’s solutions are critical for operators seeking to maximize their broadband investments and execute on the FCC’s (News - Alert) imperative with the Broadband Stimulus to provide high-speed connectivity and advanced services to all Americans:

Multimedia Interconnect Service is designed to enable operators to cost-effectively deploy addressing and routing advanced services utilizing Neustar’s SIP-IX and WMRS – including IP Multi-media Subsystem (IMS), Rich Communications Suite (RCS), High Definition Voice, and others – that harness the capabilities of a broadband network. With real-time access to routing information, operators know what services are available and provide end-to-end advanced IP services across networks, increasing network utility and encouraging customer adoption.

Margin Management Solution is currently being used by fixed-line, mobile and cable operators throughout the U.S. and Canada to generate significant cost savings through a holistic view for activating services across their network elements, optimizing their success commercially and minimizing fraud and risk.

Realtime Routing Solution allows operators that offer middle-mile broadband services the ability to create and manage traffic policies and dynamically route communications – a critical component in being able to interconnect rural communities migrating to broadband technologies.
