San Francisco Business Times reports that Palo Alto, Calif.-based computer and printer maker Hewlett-Packard is planning to build a $100 million next-generation data center in the suburbs of Sydney, Australia. As per this report, HP has submitted plans for the construction of the data center to the New South Wales government in December, and is seeking permission for the project.

Work for the center, which will be built in Eastern Creek, about an hour by car from central Sydney, is expected to be completed by the year-end. DatacenterDynamics estimates the total cost of building this center to run around $120 million.

According to DatacenterDynamics, the Eastern Creek location is more known for fast cars as it is the home to New South Wales’ motor sports raceway.

Meanwhile, speaking to DatacenterDynamics, HP said that the new data center is part of its strategy towards cloud computing, which again is part of the technology giant’s new $1 billion global services infrastructure outlook. 

Likewise, the Australian government also believes the project is driven largely by Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) plan, which it expects will encourage the spread of cloud computing services in the region, writes DatacenterDynamics.

Based on a comment by the Australian Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy reported in the Australian newspaper, Datacenter Dynamics wrote that HP’s new center is among a number of new projects across Australia. And, he believes that the growing number of new projects could be part of the Australian $36 billion plan.

However, HP’s South Pacific managing director Paul Branding said that the new Eastern Creek data center build is being seen as part of an overall push for solutions in the region, which happens to tie in with the timing of the NBN, writes DatacenterDynamics.
