Intel Processor Powered Tablets to Debut at Computex in Taiwan

By

To showcase its latest processors and related software innovations, semiconductor technology giant Intel Corp. is hosting a series of events at the upcoming Computex 2011 show in Taipei, Taiwan, May 31- June 4. While the show will kick off with the opening keynote talk by Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manger, Intel Architecture Group, the company will also exhibit a range of tablets and other mobility gadgets powered by its processors.

During an investor meeting on Tuesday, Intel CEO Paul Otellini talked about Intel’s major shift toward tablets, smartphones and smart TVs as PC market evolves. Speaking to Fox News on Wednesday, Intel unwrapped plans to extend its processors and accompanying chipsets to tablets and other mobile devices. To demonstrate its commitment to this emerging market, Intel will introduce more than 10 tablet computer models powered by its processors and chips.

In fact, according to a Wall Street Journal report, the microprocessor giant is seeking to expand beyond its PC stronghold into mobile devices dominated by ARM Holdings. Intel will showcase these new tablets along with the computer manufacturing partners. One such Asian PC manufacturer to join Intel in this demonstration is ASUSTek Computer.

While Intel Atom powered tablets will be on show, the company plans to highlight the Oak Trail version designed for tablets. Meanwhile, Intel’s general manager for Asia-Pacific, Navin Shenoy, told Fox News that more than 35 tablets using Intel chips were on track for shipping this year. Regarding demand for PCs in the second quarter, Shenoy said that the Japan earthquake, and subsequent tsunami, had minimal impact on the company’s supply chain.

While tablets overall will grow for next few years, media reports indicate that Intel Oak Trail processor powered tablets are expected to give iPads tough competition. In fact, by 2015, iPad dominance will decline and Android powered tablets using Intel processors are predicted to gain momentum.
