How to Increase your iPhone Security

By

In a world where most people cannot function as efficiently as they want without immediate and constant access to their mobile device, it is no surprise that concerns over privacy and data theft are common. Each year, malicious hackers are finding new ways to break into mobile phones in order to access a user’s data. These attempts extend to iPhone users as well, even though the company behind the popular smartphone is consistently touting its boosted security measures.

When someone has access to your mobile phone data without your knowledge or consent, it can be a challenge to correct the issue. No one wants to be put in a position where their information is in the wrong hands. To help avoid this plight, iPhone users can follow the below tips to increase the security of their mobile device no matter where or how it is being used.

Keep iOS Up to Date

Every now and again, Apple releases an updated version of its operating system, iOS. Although the update description may not provide an alluring reason to use the latest version, developers at Apple are constantly working on ways to improve security for users. Nearly all updates to iOS come with a security enhancement, patching holes in previously found coding errors.

Running the most recent system helps reduce the potential for security breaches with your mobile device, and Apple makes it easy to do so. You can simply open Settings, select General, and then Software Update from there. The device lets you know if you are already up to date, or if you have an opportunity to run an update for the latest version at that time. You may also turn on automatic updates to iOS in the settings menu.

Create a Strong Passcode

Apple requires iPhone users to create a passcode. This numeric code has gone from four to six digits, automatically enhancing security for users, but you can take an even strong route when it comes to protecting your device. Apple allows you to set a passcode that includes more than six digits, and if you prefer, adds in alphabet options as well. Combined with Face and Touch ID safeguards, creating a strong passcode can thwart attempts to hack your iPhone if it is lost or stolen.

Changing this code requires navigating to Settings, then selecting Touch or Face ID and Passcode depending on the model of your device. Once you enter your passcode, select Change Passcode and then tap Passcode Options. Here, you have the opportunity to update your code to a custom numeric code or one that includes alphanumeric selections.

Turn on Two-Factor Authentication

In addition to updating a passcode, iPhone users may also increase the security of their device by enabling two-factor authentication. Should someone get their hands on your passcode, the second layer of security that comes with two-factor authentication makes it harder to unlock the device. Several mobile apps offer two-factor authentication now, and Apple ID also comes with the option. Once it is enabled, this authentication requires an additional form of verification to unlock the phone or a specific mobile app.

To turn on this extra security feature, find your way to the Settings screen and Tap on the Apple ID banner. After selecting the ID, tap on Password and Security, then choose Turn on Two-Factor Authentication.

Enable Find my iPhone

Should your device get lost or stolen, the Find My iPhone tool is incredibly helpful. This simple security feature allows users to track the device and protect attempts to gain access to data should it ever get out of their hands. The Activation Lock feature stops anyone from using the iPhone or selling it if they are unable to access data.

If a device is lost or stolen, users can activate the feature by signing into their Find My iPhone app or iCloud website. Data can be erased immediately, and if the phone is connected to the Internet, users can track its movement.

In addition to these security features, iPhone users should strongly consider their mobile device protection. A finance specialist from Money Pug, a website used to compare cheap mobile phone insurance, explains that having the right cover on a mobile device leaves less of a chance for out-of-pocket replacement expenses should the phone be stolen or lost. Mobile phone insurance varies in terms of how much it covers, exclusions for devices over a certain age, and the total cost, making it important to compare what options are available.

Protecting your iPhone from the growing problem of theft and stolen data is as simple as using these enhanced security features. Be sure to also periodically update passcodes and iOS settings to ensure your mobile device is as best protected as possible.
