Google TV Experiencing Weak Reception?

By

Less than a month after its launch, Sony has slashed the price of its Google TV platform by an eye-popping 25 percent over the holiday shopping weekend. Black Friday mania aside, some tech insiders are pointing to Google TV as the real turkey as publications, including the New York Post, indicate sales trouble.

Sony reduced its 46-inch Google TV to $1,000 from $1,200 and its 40-inch set for $898 down from $1,000. Sony has never before cut prices on a new product, the Post points out.

Popular tech blog TechCrunch was quick to chime in on Sony’s price slashing: "This doesn't smell like a Black Friday sort of deal," read one post. “No, the price cut is everywhere from Best Buy to even the unit's product page."

Google TV has had a rough go. Earlier this month, News Corp., opted to block Google TV devices from accessing full-length episodes of its TV shows when searched from Google TV’s Web browser. News Corp., joins a growing list of major broadcasters including ABC, CBS and NBC that have decided to block access.

That should come as no surprise though. Many broadcasters want to circumvent viewing over Internet-connected TVs – a far less profitable practice than regular TV. Time Warner Cable lost 155,000 TV subscribers during the last quarter, including digital, compared to 64,000 losses last year at this time. Recently, Comcast reported losing 275,000 subscribers. That’s prompting industry observers to question whether Internet TV is starting to eat into the cable business’s profits.

Logitech Revue also delivers Google TV by allowing users to search and access content anywhere from the Web, from a satellite or cable provider, including some compatible DVRs. That’s a departure from streaming-media boxes like Apple TV and the Sony Netbox, which aim to replace, rather than join forces with, cable and satellite TV.
