The highly popular doubleTwist application for Android just got a whole lot better, and may be on its way to stealing market share from other leading digital media player apps like iTunes.
Late last year, the company introduced AirSync, a feature that allows users to sync their doubleTwist media content from their computer to their phone without the need for a USB cord. New content that is downloaded to a user's computer is automatically synced to their handset whenever they are in wireless range.
The company added to this feature on Tuesday by launching AirTwist, a free update that enables Android users to wirelessly stream music, videos and photos to their television using an Xbox or PlayStation 3.
"With more than 100 million game consoles in households today, and more than 300,000 Android devices activated daily, there is a real need for users to easily and reliably enjoy their media across all their connected devices," Jon Lech Johansen, co-founder of doubleTwist, noted in a statement.
Although doubleTwist didn't say anything about Google TV, the folks over at Engadget reported having no problems streaming songs from an Android-based handset to the Web-connected device. The company has said that the app will support other DLNA-based devices in the near future.
Users with a mobile device running on Android 1.6 or higher who have already downloaded the doubleTwist AirSync application can get the new update for free by dropping by the Android Market. Those who have yet to download the app with have to pay $4.99 for the original app, and can then access the free streaming feature.
In related news, doubleTwist announced on Tuesday that it recently broke the 1 million user threshold, powered by 300 percent growth in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to Tech Crunch.
The company also told the news source that it will be restructuring its management team to compensate for the recent uptick in downloads. Co-founder and current CTO Jon Lech Johansen will become the company's new chief executive officer, taking over the reins from Monique Farantzos, who will transition to the role of president and chairman.
