TechZone360 Week in Review

By

This week in technology and communications saw a lot of excitement, especially with so many quarterly earnings reports being released and the “Digital Olympics” opening ceremony taking place. Here are other top TechZone360 stories this week.

Among those announcing quarterly earnings reports, Apple announced financial results of $35 billion revenue. Apple was also in headlines this week as it topped Android in the enterprise user market. While Apple is still top dog in the enterprise market, representing four of the top five devices activated in the market, the number of Android devices activated in the enterprise market is rapidly growing. The use of Android smartphones doubled in the second quarter of 2012, and the combined total of Android smartphones and tablets activated represented fully 36.9 percent of all enterprise activations. The Galaxy S II from Samsung was the big gainer, with the Droid Razr coming in next, representing both 4.6 percent and 3.2 percent of all Android activations, respectively.

To say there has been hype for the upcoming London Olympics would be a serious understatement. As the world prepares for multiple days of athletic competition, many start to anticipate the opening ceremony. Renowned movie maker, Danny Boyle, has spearheaded the production of London’s Olympic Opening Ceremonies, which happened last night, with a theme that thrives on the weather that gives the city its reputation.

But not everyone across the world is in the unifying spirit. Despite reports that a reconciliation in underway between Google and the EU, it’s beginning to look like the European Union is cracking down on gigantic Internet-related U.S. companies that dominate the global market. Reports indicate that the European Union (EU) is demanding “concessions” from Google over what the Commission perceives as anti-competitive behavior. The EU claims that Google is abusing its position as the world’s leading search engine to promote its services over others, as well as unlawfully snatching information like restaurant reviews from other sites without their consent.

Security was also talked about a lot this week. The issues in network security today are different than they were just two years ago with the growth of the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend that expands the enterprise’s concern with managing the flux of mobile data across its network. In a debate at NetEvents Americas in Miami, FL this week, experts on network security gathered to ruminate over this topic, and hash out what businesses need to do to secure their networks. The BYOD element of this problem is only now being considered by the enterprise as a significant hindrance in the progression of the mobile workforce and moving towards the cloud.
