US Leads World in Spam

By

At this point in the Internet age, we all know just how annoying spam emails can be. A new report shows that while the Prince of Nigeria is sending out an inordinate amount of pleas for money, it’s the United States that is the king of the spam email. Sophos has released a report showing that a massive 24.2 percent of all spam mail came from inside the U.S. France and China come in second and third, and they are close to each other, but a far distance from the United States as they account for 6.7 and 6.2 percent of all spam sent.

While other countries around the world are likely staring disapprovingly at the U.S., there is a reason for the large market share of Spam emails that has nothing to do with an annoying populace. The United States has a huge population compared to most other countries on the list and it also has the lion’s share of the world’s Web infrastructure.

When talking about per capita numbers, it is the much less obvious Bulgaria leading the way. The new title for Bulgaria comes after Belarus had actually held the title of most spam emails per person for the previous nine months. The Sophos report is quite interesting but doesn’t delve deeply into some numbers, such as how much those numbers are rising or falling.

The industry analyst points out that quite a bit of spam these days is coming from people who never expected to actually send spam. People who have their computers or emails infected with malware are going to be sending those spam emails without ever hitting the send button. The company obviously isn’t offering up any solutions for this problem either, but rather simply pointing out what countries are responsible for unwanted emails around the globe.
