Dell Getting Back Into Tablet Business with New Streak

When it comes to the tablet market, it appears that Dell (News - Alert) has taken the approach of “if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.” Last year, Dell released a tablet model known as the Streak. The Android (News - Alert) based Streak 5 and Streak 7 were so unpopular that they were quickly taken off the market. While the sheer number of Android based tablets that have come and gone is astounding, there is no shortage of companies that are willing to give it another go. Dell appears to be another in a long line of companies that believe sooner or later they will get a tablet out there that can gain some traction.

A Dell executive said that his company has been taking its time in getting another Streak out on the market, mainly because of the vast number of Android OS tablets that have failed miserably. While there are very few additional details about what this new Streak will look like, there are rumors that one change might include the adoption of the Windows 8 operating system. Dell said that this new tablet will be released at the end of 2012, which coincides with Microsoft's (News - Alert) release of their new OS, which has tablet optimizations.

Dell is looking to stay relevant in a computing field that has been gradually moving away from the more traditional PCs. The Streak 5 was a flop mainly because the tablet, (boasting just a 5-inch screen) was little more than a slightly larger smartphone. The Streak 7 was a 7-inch screened tablet that simply didn't do enough different to warrant much interest.

Dell has been diversifying its interests in the last few years, and it will also be heavily invested in the success of the new lighter laptops which are being called “Ultrabooks.” These laptops are supposed to be an alternative to the Macbook Airs, giving users the lightweight approach, but a Windows based operating system. Considering that Dell's version of the Ultrabook will still cost about $1,000 these notebooks won't be giving customers much in the way of price relief. The Ultrabooks will start shipping next month.
