Samsung Shows off Optical Smart Hub

By

Samsung has presented its Optical Smart Hub which has many features – including those for backing up and accessing media files – operating on diverse devices.

The Smart Hub SE-208BW, an optical disk drive, will be offered sometime during the first quarter of this year. It will sell for about $129.99.

It offers a lot in terms of access, according to industry analysts. For example, it can be accessed from smartphones, tablets and smart televisions. In addition, as many as four different devices can access the smart hub at the same time, media reports said.

Also, the Smart Hub can provide for more storage “by acting as a personal cloud,” the company says in a recent statement. That means users can have a “Wi-Fi home cloud system,” the company adds.

Another feature lets the Smart Hub offer writing CDs and DVDs “without ever turning on a desktop or notebook,” the company said.

A related app for Samsung tablets and smartphones is now being offered, according to the company. The Android app for the Optical Smart Hub is available, and an app for iPhone will be offered later, according to a report on TechZone360. A Kindle app and Smart TV app are also forthcoming.

In its review of the product, Tom’s Guide notes that it features “built-in Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB components to provide a disc-based cloud solution… This method means you can toss in your favorite DVD and stream the movie directly to a Smart TV, tablet or smartphone without having to crank up a desktop or laptop, or go through the annoying rip-and-convert procedure,” Tom’s Guide adds.

Also, televisions which have DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatibility can use the Optical Smart Hub for Allshare, the company said. That lets users “view drive content through the TV menu to play multimedia files on CDs and DVDs," Tom’s Guide quoted from a company statement. "Performing as a Digital Media Server, the SE-208BW will be a keystone of home entertainment, providing a connection between mobile devices and TV or PC, and also a triangular connection among TVs, PCs and mobile devices."
